Cornelia's Supernatural: on shipping
I love wincest. Would I want SPN to be about the big gay relationship of Sam and Dean? No. I have fanfics for that. I love Supernatural as it is, and I’d never change it. And I wouldn’t go around the internet advertising it as something that it’s not to try and validate my ship.
Honestly “big gay relationship” and “I have fanfics for that” are the things about this post that stick in my mind the most. “Big gay relationship” because it sounds mocking and “I have fanfics for that” because it pisses me off.
The big gay relationship - Believe it or not, this is far from the first time I’ve seen this phrase written. And it strikes me that there’s always an exaggeration. “The big gay relationship” isn’t how you’d describe two people in love, it’s how you’d describe the monster hiding in your closet. (lol, get it? What? I’m not allowed to think that’s funny?) If it had been a straight couple, it would have said “the relationship between…” But this says “the big gay relationship of Sam and Dean.”
Not between, but of.
I know I’m overanalyzing this person innappropriately and nitpicking words, but why “of Sam and Dean?” Why not “between Sam and Dean?” I feel like it’s important, and I couldn’t say specifically why, but it feels like it’s distancing. By phrasing it the way it was phrased, it seems like it’s less about what actually goes on between Sam and Dean and their actual feelings than it is about the relationship. It says, to me, the “Big gay relationship consisting of Sam and Dean” instead of “The relationship between Sam and Dean.” It’s not about Sam and Dean and their feelings. It’s about the gay relationship and they just happen to be a part of it. That’s not my issue with this post, though. Or my issue with this quote. Just something I noticed and had to think about. But my issues with this post and this quote have more to do with it’s attitude towards homosexuality.
First off, it exaggerates homosexuality (Big Gay) and demeans it. By passing off homosexuality as this gigantic, overbearing presence while simulteneously relegating it to the world of fanfiction, this post creates the illusion that homosexuality is unnatural and/or best kept in a safe little box away from the real world.
Secondly, fanfiction is characterized as a satisfactory substitute for homosexual relationships on TV. You want to know why I write/read slash fanfics – because I’m not going to get a good, gay, sexualized relationship on TV. When I do (rarely) get gay relationships, they’re either de-sexualized, de-romanticized, unhealthy, or swept so under the rug that they might as well not be there to begin with. Hard as it may be to comprehend, I want to see gay relationships flourish on TV. If I have to constantly be watching opposite sex couples making-out/having-sex then I should also be allowed to see same sex couples do it. Especially when I see two characters who have so much chemistry and romantic tension be kept apart simply based on the fact that they have the same reproductory organs. It’s stupid and unfair. I write fanfiction because I’m not getting anything else, not because I don’t need anything else. I settle for fanfiction, but if I could, for a second, have SPN be about the “big gay relationship” between Sam and Dean or Dean and Cas, I would.
Why do gay relationships have to be such a big deal? I honestly, for the life of me, can’t figure out the problem. I can’t understand why ‘big’ needed to be added to to ‘gay relationship’ or why ‘gay’ needed to be added to ‘relationship’ or why voting for Dean and Cas as TV’s Top Couple is such a big deal, but I find it confounding, irritating, and heartbreaking.
Thirdly, this post essentially says that anyone who’s seeking validation for their ship or actively encourages their ship is delusional and disrespectful to the show. But that’s the whole point of shipping. It’s to notice two characters (or more) who go well together and to encourage them to go well together…preferably while making out. It’s to say “Hey, I like them. Hey, they have good chemistry. Hey, the show seems like they might actually realize this.” Why’s that a problem? Evidently it’s not, as long as you keep your thoughts to yourself, write fanfiction, and not ever tell anybody else that you think your characters go well and why.
And in the end, guys, regardless of any of the points I’ve made or any of the points the OP made, I really don’t give a shit. I have an oppurtunity to vote for Dean/Cas on a Top Couples contest and I’m bleeding taking it. Because, frankly, I don’t give a flying fuck how Jensen Ackles feels or how Misha Collins feels or how “disrespectful” it is to a show that I’ve dedicated six/seven years of my life to and to whose characters I’ve become so invested in that I actually get so involved so as to hope they can be together and be happy. Because if people are really telling me that I shouldn’t vote for two characters I think have pheonomenal chemistry because it might hurt the actors feelings/make them uncomfortable or because me showing my adoration for two characters is disrespectful to the show (which, if anything, it’s the opposite) then I think maybe I’m not the one who’s taking the whole thing too seriously.
Also, why are so many people so concerned about the show’s feelings? Or the actors feelings? Not to sound like a total scumbag because I genuinely think the actors are good people, but I don’t care if my desire for Cas and Dean to get together makes Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins feel weird. Because guess what, I’m not shipping Cockles here. I realize they play the characters and good on them, but I don’t ship Destiel because of the actors and they’re hardly due credit (at least not full credit) for it. I ship Destiel because of the characters and the story. Part of that’s acting, part of that’s writing, part of that’s directing, part of that’s music, part of that’s editing, part of that’s chemistry (which, not to sound petty or whatever negative emotion might be ascribed to my following statement, is usually beyond the control of the actors,) and part of that’s the work of whatever invisible force I can’t name makes those tiny, unseeable pheremones of love fill up the screen whenever Cas and Dean look at each other.
But, seriously guys, back to my first question: Why are so many people so concerned about the show’s feelings? Let’s pretend, for a second, that voting for Cas and Dean is actually somehow disrespectful to the show – what’s it going to do? Pout? Lock itself in the bathroom and cry? Or maybe it’ll leave us and find new fans.
I’m sorry if this post is so scattered – I’m pretty tired. And rambly. Basically – love the pairing you love, vote for it when you get the chance, show homosexuality on tv, and free love for everyone.
I am frankly bothered by the fact that Dean & Castiel might win that poll about best TV couple of 2012. For the simple fact that they are not a couple.
Had it been a poll about ‘best ship’ or ‘favourite ship of the internet’ or whatever, of course. I’d love for a Spn ship to win, even if it’s…
