This is true. When you love someone and they are threatened you would give up anything to keep them from harm. Do anything and say anything to keep them safe and dry the tears from their eyes. Triumph means nothing if they must suffer for you to obtain it.

For heaven sake Arthur was desperate, he father was about to kill the love of his life. Sure he loves Camelot, but he loves Gwen too and at the end of the day he is allowed to love them both. Just because he was willing to give his crown up doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care for Camelot. And for heaven’s sake it was Gwen that told him that he needed to stay for the sake of his people!

This is why I like to employ a handy trick I call Lying. It enables you to tell your father you’re not actually in love with the woman you’re in love with and to swear to end the relationship without much consequence. On the other hand, telling your father you’re willing to give up the throne for the woman you love because he’s trying to kill her because you love her will probably only further his cause. Plus, they were already sneaking around behind everyone’s backs to begin with, I don’t see how lying is a big issue.

And if it had been Merlin I, personally, think it still would have been OOC. Because it has been Merlin and Arthur hasn’t done much. Help him escape on occasion, but not enough to justify comparing him and Merlin to him and Gwen. Also, we’ve been here before with Gwen and Arthur as well. And Arthur helped her escape, not declare he’d give up his throne. It was OOC.
