It’s that last gif that just breaks my heart. This is Dean, “angels don’t care and when they try they break” Winchester watching Cas getting whaled on, and how conflicted must he be right now? Because he is still so damn angry about everything, it’s eating him up, and trying to talk didn’t help, and losing his temper with Cas made him feel like he was kicking a puppy and that’s so wrong because Cas for all his baby in a trench-coat jibes was never that angel- he was a rock for Dean, who in turn got to be a stronger rock for Sam, and it’s just all messed up and you know, maybe there is even a part of him that thinks of punching Cas himself in all his frustrated confusion, for all the shit that went down, but he knows, he knows even if he ever went that far, he’d pull back just like Cas did for him, because anger is all well and good, but the reason it burns so bright still remains. Hester beating Cas is just one more reminder to Dean of all the shit she accused him of being true, the minute Cas touched him he was lost-and as Sam winces as the blows land, Dean refuses to, he just watches, soaking it in, the truth rattling in his brain. Cas cares, and he seems destined to die for it again, and again, and again.

And Dean figures, this time, with Cas seeming so lost, running from the darkness within himself, maybe Dean should witness Cas’s pain, all of it- since between the two of them, he’s the only one aware of it’s true cause this time. Cas protecting Dean, one last time, deserves Dean’s attention. Better late than never right?

I missed this so much. Cas adds so much depth to the show. The writers don’t even seem to realize just how vital he is to Dean’s character.
